About Lexapro

Lexapro also known as escitalopram is a commonly prescribed antidepressant medication called an SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Lexapro works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin. Unlike other antidepressants called SNRIs, Lexapro does not increase levels of norepinephrine or dopamine. Lexapro does act as an antihistamine, which contributes to the medication causing a tiring or sedative effect in some patients. Before starting a medication like Lexapro make sure to tell your doctor if you’ve been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder in the past or have a heart condition, as this medication may worsen these conditions.
